After making the rounds in Europe and Asia, Sony announced today the U.S. availability of its Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 smartphones, and the SmartWatch 2. But a word of caution: If you’re eyeing one of these phones, it’s going to cost you.
Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Sony Xperia Z Ultra
Introduced earlier this summer at the Mobile Asia Expo, the Xperia Z Ultra is the company’s latest Android phablet, and features a 6.4-inch HD touchscreen and handwriting-recognition software, so you can take notes using a stylus (not included). It’s also waterproof in up to five feet of water for up to 30 minutes, and has a quad-core processor from Qualcomm.
But, without the backing of a U.S. carrier, the 3G version of the Xperia Z Ultra costs $650, and the LTE version goes for $680. Both will work with AT&T or T-Mobile SIM cards.
The Xperia Z1’s hallmark feature is its 20.7-megapixel camera. It’s also waterproof and has a quad-core processor, but has a smaller (compared to the Xperia Z Ultra, that is) five-inch HD touchscreen.

A final year student of Lagos State Polytechnic, Ibrahim Oluwaseun, 26, has been killed by suspected cult members at his parents’ home in Somolu area of Lagos. The deceased, a student of Business Administration, was said to  have been preparing to defend his final year project this week when he was killed on Friday night.
Our correspondent also gathered that the deceased was sitting with his mother outside their home on New Balogun street, when he was shot around 9pm.
An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the gunmen were about seven.
He said, “They were seven in number; they came to the area fully armed. All those guys were strangers to us but have been coming to the area for some time now. Nobody knew exactly what they were up to.
“That night, they confronted the boys in the area with guns and immediately people saw them, they ran for their lives.
“They shot at Oluwaseun who was with his mum outside their house. It wasn’t as if Oluwaseun was involved in any fight. He fell into the gutter immediately he was shot, just as everybody tried running for cover.”
PunchNg gathered that in the ensuing confusion, neither of Oluwaseun’s neighbours nor relatives, witnessed his fall into the gutter. It wasn’t until after the confusion had subsided that residents allegedly observed that Oluwaseun was nowhere to be found.
Another source told us that the Divisional Police Officer, Somolu Station, responding to a distress call on the shooting, drafted some patrol teams to the area.
He said, “Two patrol vehicles were sent to the area but even while the police patrolled the streets, no one noticed that Oluwaseun was in the gutter. Perhaps he might have survived the shooting if he had been discovered on time.”
Oluwaseun was said to have been discovered, few minutes after the shooting; by then, he was already dead. His corpse was said to have been recovered from the gutter by the police and taken to the Gbagada General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
When our correspondent visited the scene a day after the incident, there was an uneasy calm on the street; shops were under lock and key.
While a candlelight procession was held in the deceased’s honour on Saturday, there were fears among residents of more attacks. At the Oluwaseuns’ residence, visitors poured in to condole with the deceased’s family and pay tribute to his memory. His distraught mother was said to be unavailable for comments.
However, a close friend of the family, Alhaja Modupeola Kazeem, described  Oluwaseun as gentle and an easygoing young man.
Kazeem said, “I was shocked on hearing the news because I am like a second mother to him. I was one of the people who brought him up; he was a cheerful person who never made trouble. We were all surprised how those guys just came and shot at him without any provocation. Ibrahim was just a victim; he was never part of any bad group.”
She added that Oluwaseun had been buried on Saturday in accordance with Muslim rites.
The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, confirmed the incident to our reporter on the telephone. He said, “There was indeed an incident on Friday night in which some suspected cultists shot one Oluwaseun in Somolu. Police immediately swung into action. They saw him lying down and he was rushed to the hospital where he died. We are investigating the case to ensure we bring the culprits to book.”

For 2014, Porsche is giving its Panamera a mid-term face lift. Let’s get the bad news out of the way first: A manual transmission is no longer offered in the Panamera. The six-speed gearbox was previously available in rear-drive versions, but the writing had been on the wall, as few customers actually opted for the stick. And now to the good news; every Panamera—save for the not-for-America diesel model—gets more power.
The naturally aspirated, entry-level 3.6-liter V-6 gets 10 more horsepower, for a total of 310. The engine is Porsche's own—essentially the 4.8-liter V-8 minus a cylinder from each bank—and it has nothing to do with the Volkswagen-designed 3.6-liter VR6 found in the Cayenne and a number of other VW Group models.

Picking an England squad is never easy. There is always going to be debate no matter which players are selected and some England supporters just love a good moan at the national set-up and manager Roy Hodgson.

However, this article looks at the Englishman who can genuinely feel hard done by not to being included in the squad for the upcoming games against Montenegro and Poland. If all five keep up their good early season form, a place in the final 23 should the Three Lions get to Brazil, will certainly be within their reach.

1. Adam Lallana

Adam Lallana of Southampton (20) celebrates as he scores their first goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Southampton and Swansea City at St Mary's Stadium on October 6, 2013 in Southampton, England
Saints captain Lallana has been in incredible form in the opening seven games of the season. Southampton are currently 4th in the Premier League table and have only lost once all season.

The 25-year old is the south coast club's attacking lynch-pin and through him comes most of their forward threat, linking from the other midfielders to strikers Ricky Lambert (who is in the squad) and new signing Pablo Osvaldo. Adam would add much needed skill on the wing to the current England squad with Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain missing injured and he can also play centrally.

Lallana does already have one England appearance, coming on as a substitute over a year ago against Ukraine, and he hopes to add to that claiming it "an ambition" and looking to "emulate" good friend Lambert.

League to replace international friendlies?

UEFA is considering a radical overhaul of international football that would see national teams playing a new Nations League competition.
The idea, mooted at executive committee meetings that preceded a UEFA meeting in Dubrovnik last month, would see European football’s governing body using existing dates for friendlies in the international calendar to launch a new league involving all 54 member nations.
Under the plans, all UEFA members would be divided into a series of perhaps nine divisions based on their recent results, with promotion and relegation following each round of matches.
The winner of the first division would be UEFA’S Nations League champion and win a cash prize, with the bottom team in each division being relegated in favour of the winner of the division below.
The Norwegian FA president, Yngve Hallen, who sits on UEFA’s national committee for international tournaments, said: “It is true that a series of games is one of the models being discussed.”
If the UEFA Nations League idea is developed, then the European governing body would be likely to look to centralise the TV and marketing rights in the same way as it has for the Champions League.
“The success of the Champions League has already inspired the Europa League. This is also something they are trying to look at in connection with the Nations League – how this can sharpen the market. That’s what this is largely about,” said Hallen.
“But there have been very clear political guidelines from all 54 federations that the focus needs to be on the football/competitive aspect. All countries should have equal opportunities,” he added.
“No-one should have to qualify for this tournament – everyone plays from the first game. And then there is also a recognition that tournament form should be easy to understand for most people. All this we need to work out.”
The Swedish FA representative Karl-Erik Nilsson told Aftonbladet that “it has been established that it is difficult to get interest around friendlies”.
“For 2020 it has been looked at whether it would be possible to combine traditional qualifiers with with this league format, instead of friendlies, to increase interest,” he said.
“It is worth looking at but we were clear that it can’t have an impact on the qualifiers for the Euro tournaments. The qualifiers are No1 and have the highest priority. There won’t be more international games because of this.”
He said the initial reaction among the 54 members was that “creating more interest is not something negative”.
Nilsson added: “All 54 members were in Croatia and the idea was presented from a perspective of: is this worth looking at? And the overall feeling was: ‘let’s look at it but don’t let it have an impact on the qualifiers’.”
With interest in friendly internationals at an all time low, the idea has some appeal. One wonders though, whether the likes of England or Spain would be prepared to write off the income they would lose from lucrative friendlies against the likes of Brazil and Argentina. If UEFA could guarantee them financial compensation, one would imagine they would.

Clubs happy with Champions League

The European Club Association (ECA) has insisted it is happy with the UEFA Champions League format after Galatasaray chairman Unal Aysal called for it ti be replaced by a European Super League.
Aysal was talking at the Leaders in Football Conference in London, and stated that the time had come for a new league for Europe.
“I think it is the future of football,” he said. “It has to be created, not after 10 years, but as soon as possible.
“Football is a big industry, a growing industry, and a European super league will bring a lot of support and also energise football in general.
“I think it could be 20 big teams, for example, in Europe, with the last three, four or five teams can change every year.
“I think it can be operated in a proper way in order to make it effective and useful to European football and also to bring new horizons in football.”
Aysal insisted that a Super League would not necessarily mean a breakaway from UEFA, but admitted that this would be a price worth paying to get the new league up and running.
“The system has to be put in place, either by UEFA or by the clubs themselves. Then we will decide if a breakaway will be necessity or not,” he continued.
“It’s not yet totally elaborated and prepared and put on the paper. But it is a concept that is under discussion for a few years. It is not a new concept, but we favour it.
“The first 15-20 big clubs of Europe all agree with this – nobody will say no. Manchester United, Paris St Germain, Real Madrid.
“There may be one or two exceptions for local reasons, political reasons, and I will understand, but as the future for European clubs and the future of football, nobody can say no to this.
“Every reality starts with a dream. At the moment, it looks like a dream, a vision. I am sure, sooner or later, in a maximum of five years’ time, it will be a reality.
“Other clubs’ bosses, presidents and chairman are looking at this opportunity and talking to each other I think we will come together and look into each other’s eyes and follow it.”
However, the European Club Association issued a quick rebuttal to Aysal’s comments, insisting they are more than happy with the current Champions League set-up.
A statement read: “The European Club Association (ECA) has taken note of comments made today regarding the alleged creation of a European Super League in 2018.
“ECA underlines that such an idea was never discussed within the association and never figured on any meeting agenda. ECA is very happy with the current European club competitions.”
Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the head of ECA, said: “Our European Super League is the UEFA Champions League!
“We are very happy with the current competitions and our extremely fruitful collaboration with UEFA.
“We will continue to work together with UEFA, and this beyond 2018.”

Real Madrid fines fined for Nazi symbols

A Spanish government commission has imposed fines of 3,000 euros each on four Real Madrid fans who displayed Nazi symbols at last month’s La Liga match against city rivals Atletico at Real’s Bernabeu stadium.
The four were members of the far right “Ultras Sur” group and the symbols displayed including a swastika and the German word “Totenkopf”, a reference to the Nazis’ SS paramilitary organisation, according to an official who asked not to be identified by name.
Real, who lost the match 1-0, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The four, who were not named, were also banned from sporting venues for six months.
The punishments were imposed by Spain’s commission against violence, racism, xenophobia and intolerance in sport.
